Wildlife Backpackers and Volunteers South Africa

Thornhill is a small community located 25min from Jeffreys bay towards Port Elizabeth, volunteers will stay at our Wildlife Lodge at African Dawn and transported to and from the project on week days.

The aim of our community projects is both to have a cultural exchange and the upliftment of disadvantaged communities.

The projects we use are both for the need in the area and the safety factor of our volunteers. Volunteers will be organized by a representative.

The projects we help with is mostly determined by the budgets available and the need at the time and ranges across a large spectrum from repairing to building schools, helping teachers in the classroom or the elderly with the vegetable gardens that supports the soup kitchens.

Groups are encouraged to do fundraising for larger projects that can be started before or during their arrival. As we are a non profit organization all donation go directly to the specified projects.

Thornhill Crèche

We have recently repaired and adopted this school as one of our main projects.

Background:

  • The school has 1 permanently employed care giver who is very dedicated but lack resources such as age specific teaching aides. The volunteer will therefore be expected to assist in a very creative manner making use of the most basic equipment to fulfil the daily program objectives.

  • Presently there are 25 children to the 1 teacher and this brings capacity problems in terms of human resources. The volunteer will be of great help here in order to run smaller classes based on age or special needs.

  • A primary help will be obtaining financial aid. This will allow the teachers access to material (Photostats, paper, books, crayons etc) to use in the classroom situation. Another area is to create a project to teach the children how to help themselves through the environment – growing vegetables to eat, flowers to sell etc.

The school receives no grants or funding of any sort from local or national government, infrastructure is therefore basic but functional, salaries low and teacher aids minimal. A basic feeding program exists consisting of a bowl of maze meal (porridge) and sugar.
